Windows 11 Upgrade Checklist

Last updated: October 2025

Use these steps to safely upgrade from Windows 10. If any step fails, stop and reach out — I can help.

  1. Verify Windows activation

Go to Settings → Update & Security → Activation. You should see “Windows is activated with a digital license.” If not activated, resolve activation before upgrading.

  2. Check hardware compatibility

Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check to confirm: 4GB+ RAM, 64GB+ storage, compatible CPU, UEFI/Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0.

    • If TPM/Secure Boot are disabled, enable them in BIOS/UEFI (if supported).
    • If the PC isn’t compatible, Windows 10 remains supported until October 2025.
  3. Back up important files

Backup Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads and any business data (QuickBooks, PST files) to an external drive or cloud. Open a few files from the backup to verify.

Need detailed steps? See the Backup Procedure Checklist.

  4. Run the upgrade

Use Windows Update (Upgrade to Windows 11) or Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Keep the PC plugged in and don’t interrupt the process.

  5. Post‑install checks

    • Settings → Activation shows Windows is activated (digital license carries over on the same device).
    • Update drivers and Windows (Settings → Windows Update).
    • Reconnect printers/Wi‑Fi as needed; resume OneDrive/Google Drive sync.

About licensing

If your Windows 10 is already activated on this device, the Windows 11 upgrade is typically free on the same hardware. A new license is only needed if Windows isn’t activated, the motherboard has been replaced, or you’re moving to a new PC.

Use your browser’s print dialog to print this page or save it as a PDF to bring to appointments.
